Plot summary
Conor O'Malley, twelve, lives with his mother, whose chemotherapy treatments leave her needing help in the mornings, so his strict grandmother comes to stay. Conor dislikes his grandmother and dreads the plan for him to live with her. His father, remarried and living in America, is far away. At school, a classmate named Harry beats him while other boys watch. One night at seven minutes past midnight, the yew tree by the church becomes a Monster and carries Conor into the garden. It says it will tell him three stories, and that when they are finished Conor must tell a fourth, his own truth, the thing he dreams of and hides.

- Liam Neeson voiced the Monster but was never on set during shooting: he had finished his motion-capture performance in a two-week stretch beforehand, with Lewis MacDougall in the room. Tom Holland, who had worked with director J. A. Bayona on The Impossible, was the Monster's stand-in on set.
- After being pulled from all but 42 theaters in its third week of wide release, A Monster Calls made just $19,080, a 96.4% drop, one of the biggest third-week theater drops in history.
