Plot summary
Five or six years into their marriage, John and Jane Smith live in a Colonial Revival house outside New York City and sit in marriage counseling, where a lack of communication and small acts of aggression, such as Jane hanging drapes John said he disliked, come up. They met in Bogotá, Colombia, posing as a couple to avoid questioning by Colombian authorities, and married after a fast courtship. Neither knows that the other works as a field operative for a separate contract-killing firm, a job each conceals behind a cover story. Both take an assignment to kill Benjamin Danz in a prison transfer, and cross paths on the job.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Roughly two-thirds of the way through filming, the producers reviewed the footage and concluded the film needed no villains at all, since they only distracted from the central romantic conflict between the Smiths, and cut every scene in which the villains appeared.
- Producers first secured Brad Pitt and Nicole Kidman for the leads, but Kidman dropped out over scheduling conflicts with The Stepford Wives and Pitt then dropped out too; Aishwarya Rai was next approached to play Jane Smith and refused, uncomfortable with on-screen kissing.
- In 2006 New Zealand author Gavin Bishop accused the makers of the movie of plagiarizing his 1997 school book, The Secret Lives of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, about a husband and wife living apparently dull suburban lives while, unknown to each other, both work as spies.
- The government of Colombia criticized the film for showing the capital Bogotá as a small village in the middle of the jungle, and President Alvaro Uribe Vélez and Mayor Luis Eduardo Garzón invited Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and the producers to get to know the city.
- In the chase scene John was scripted to run into a picket fence rigged to break on impact, but during the take that was ultimately used Pitt accidentally slipped and fell onto the fence instead.
- The filming marked the beginning of Pitt and Jolie's real-life romantic relationship, which led to marriage and children and ran from 2005 to 2016.
