Plot summary
Tami Oldham reaches Tahiti on a schooner and meets Richard Sharp, a British sailor, who invites her to dinner aboard his boat, Mayaluga. The two spend more time together and begin planning a trip to Japan. In town they encounter Peter and Christine Crompton, the owners of the yacht Hazaña. The Cromptons offer Richard ten thousand dollars and a return first-class ticket to Tahiti to sail the vessel to San Diego, California. Richard accepts on the condition that Tami comes along and that she also gets a ticket. He proposes with a ring he made himself, and she accepts. The couple set out aboard Hazaña for the long crossing.
