The Youngest Evangelist (2021) on Netflix

Plot summary

The story goes back to 1980, when John King is a ten-year-old African American boy. He watches his mother, Eva King, live through domestic violence at home and then embrace salvation, and the change in her makes him want that faith for himself. A hard journey follows in which his love for God grows. At home, at school, at church and at play, he learns to obey and respect his parents, his teachers and his elders, and he faces the consequences when he does not. Shorter threads run alongside his story: one about dealing with a serious disease and others about respect for public school educators and about the music and band programs schools offer.
