Plot summary
After a fire destroys much of Rome, Emperor Nero turns on the city's Christians, and Paul the Apostle is held in Mamertine Prison awaiting execution. Mauritius Gallus, the new prefect, blames him for the blaze. Outside, Priscilla and Aquila lead a community in hiding and argue over whether to stay in the city or lead their people away. Luke, a physician sent by Christian communities elsewhere, reaches Rome and gets into the prison with forged papers. He asks Paul to set down an account of his life and teaching, and Paul begins to recall his earlier years as Saul of Tarsus, a persecutor of Christians.

- Jim Caviezel was cast as Luke, his first biblical role since he played Jesus in The Passion of the Christ in 2004. Caviezel said Mel Gibson told him that role would ruin his career, and that he has no regrets about it.
- Filming took place on Malta, where St. Paul's Island is known as the spot where Paul and Luke were shipwrecked on their way to Rome. Many of the crew were drawn from HBO's Game of Thrones, another production shot on the island.
