Plot summary
Soldiers from 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment occupy a ridge above the Kajaki Dam in Helmand, Afghanistan. A patrol of snipers is sent to break up a Taliban roadblock. In a dried river bed at the base of the ridge, LCpl Stuart Hale triggers a land mine and loses his leg. Cpl Mark Wright, a mile away, hears the blast, assembles a patrol and descends the slope. The soldiers reach Hale and probe the earth to make a route to a landing zone for a helicopter. Cpl Stuart Pearson walks back over the path they have cleared. While retrieving a water container, he triggers a second blast. He lies yards off, and any attempt to get to him might set off further devices. He tightens a tourniquet and gives himself morphine as the others wait.
