Trailer

Plot summary

Duplo aliens descend on Bricksburg, and Emmet offers their leader a heart he built as a peace offering. The gesture fails, the Duplos rampage, and the city falls. Five years later the city stands as Apocalypseburg, a grim place whose people have turned dark and edgy. Emmet alone stays cheerful, which Lucy and the others find childish. A mini-doll named General Sweet Mayhem arrives and seizes Emmet's friends, carrying them off to the Systar System, where the shape-shifting Queen Watevra Wa'Nabi rules. The other Master Builders will not help him rescue them, judging him too soft for the journey, so he converts his house into a spaceship and sets out alone. In space, a rugged adventurer named Rex Dangervest saves him from an asteroid storm and offers to join the search.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Daniel Radcliffe was set to voice Larry Potter, a look-alike of his Harry Potter character, but the cameo was cut; director Mike Mitchell said it was deleted to avoid risking anything that would upset the Harry Potter fandom, and the character became Larry Poppins.
  • A minifigure of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg appears in the film. Writers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller wanted unexpected figures and received Ginsburg's blessing for the appearance, though she did not perform any voice work for the role.
  • After the film underperformed commercially, Warner Bros. let its Lego film rights expire and Universal Pictures picked them up in 2020, making this the final Warner Bros. Lego Movie installment and the last Lego theatrical film until Universal's Piece by Piece in 2024.
  • The producers wrote "Catchy Song" as a deliberate earworm to follow the first film's "Everything Is Awesome", with its repeated lyric "This song's gonna get stuck inside your head". Writer Jon Lajoie said he found the first song "annoyingly catchy" and the only way to outdo it was to dial the annoying up to 11.
  • Because the Lego Friends mini-dolls such as General Sweet Mayhem have no separate leg movement or rotating wrists, the team avoided walking and movement patterns the real toys could not do, and brought in a choreography team to plan a song-and-dance number around those limits.
  • Producer Dan Lin said Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were rewriting the script while the film was already in production, and that the sequel would include more songs because of the success of Disney musicals like Frozen and Moana.
  • Gal Gadot was set to reprise Wonder Woman from the DC Extended Universe, replacing Cobie Smulders from the first film, but Smulders ended up returning to the role shortly before the film's release.
