Plot summary
After their parents die, Marla grows careful and overprotective toward her younger brother Charlie, who has become quiet and distant. One night he slips out to a toy museum with a Playmobil exhibit, and when Marla follows, a lighthouse sends them both into the Playmobil world. Charlie turns into a Viking warrior in the middle of a battle, and pirates seize him and carry him away. Looking for help, Marla reaches a nearby town and meets Del, a food truck driver owed money for pink hay that gives horses wings. She shows the town her Viking gold, and Del agrees to help find Charlie for it. Del brings her to Rex Dasher, an old friend of his who works as a secret agent and says characters have been disappearing.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Playmobil: The Movie (2019)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Playmobil was released only weeks after Frozen II in a variable-pricing experiment in which STX and many theater chains offered $5 tickets; it grossed just $167,000 on its opening day, the third-worst opening day ever for a film playing in more than 2,000 theaters, behind Delgo and The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure.
- The German Playmobil company sent every Playmobil set ever released to the film's Los Angeles development office, and the writers used the toys to conceive characters; a food truck and a figure wearing a Hawaiian shirt led to the creation of Del.
- To animate the figures' faces, the team tried a "texture flipbook" of preset features but found it too limiting and expensive, and settled on 3D-rig-controlled 2D shapes converted into a dynamic texture applied to the 3D head and rendered in real time.
- The car driven by secret agent Rex Dasher is a Porsche Mission E, the 2015 concept version of the Porsche Taycan; the film is the Porsche's first appearance in a major film, and a remote-controlled Mission E toy was released as a tie-in.
- Meghan Trainor's involvement in the film began while she was writing "Run Like The River" for her album Treat Myself; a week after being told the song should be in a movie, she presented it to DiSalvo.
