Plot summary
Queen Poppy is still new to her role as queen of the Pop Trolls when a letter arrives from Queen Barb of the Hard Rock Trolls, inviting every tribe to a party that will unite their music. Poppy's father King Peppy explains that the trolls once shared six strings, one for each kind of music, and that the tribes scattered after an argument over which music was best. Peppy and Branch warn Poppy that Barb cannot be trusted, but she sneaks away with the Pop string to prove otherwise. Branch, hoping to tell Poppy how he feels, travels with her, and Biggie stows away on the balloon. Cooper sets off alone to find trolls shaped like him, and Barb sends bounty hunters after Poppy.

- When Universal put Trolls World Tour on demand without consulting theater owners, AMC Theatres said it would not license any Universal film that also premiered digitally in its 1,000 theaters, and Regal Cinemas followed. In July 2020 the two sides settled, cutting the usual 90-day theatrical window to 17 days and ending AMC's ban.
- Podcasters the McElroy brothers began campaigning for roles in the Trolls sequel in March 2017 with a podcast titled "The McElroy Brothers Will Be in Trolls 2". DreamWorks confirmed in September 2018 that the campaign worked and the brothers would make cameo appearances in Trolls World Tour.
- Trolls World Tour set FandangoNow's record for the most streams in a release weekend and topped Amazon Prime, Comcast, Apple TV, Vudu, YouTube and DirecTV. Universal reported it was purchased 10 times more than its previous day-one rental Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which made $2-3 million on its first day.
- Trolls World Tour grossed $48 million against a $110 million budget, making it the first CGI DreamWorks Animation film to earn less than it cost.
- For Trolls World Tour, DreamWorks used its then-new MoonRay rendering system to use less motion blur on the character animation than in the first film and to add more traditional animation smears. Later DreamWorks films kept using the technique.
- Some of the cast of Trolls World Tour, including Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake, were not told about its video-on-demand release, and their representatives tried to secure the bonuses they would have received had the film done well in theaters.
- Trolls World Tour was the first film Universal had given a simultaneous theatrical and pay television release since 1983's The Pirates of Penzance.
