Plot summary
Talbot Roe sits under a tree beside the body of his Kiowa wife, who has died, and waits to die himself. Because he will not bury her, she haunts him. His father Prescott Roe wants a new wife for his son, so he rides to Eamon McCree, who sold him the first one. McCree's daughter, the dead woman's sister, is a champion horse rider and half Indian. McCree refuses to give her up, and Roe takes her by force. She agrees to help for gold and four horses. Talbot fears she has come to take his wife's body, and at night the ghost asks him to destroy the corpse. He refuses.
