Plot summary
After the death of her husband Willie, Missie LaHaye gives up the ranch she cannot run alone and takes her ten-year-old son Mattie back to her hometown, where her parents Clark and Marty Davis farm nearby. She returns to teaching school, and at her first Sunday service the pastor tells the congregation that an Orphan Train of homeless children from the Children's Aid Society of New York will soon arrive. Missie has no intention of giving Mattie the sibling he asks for, but she goes to the church distribution and watches fourteen-year-old Belinda lash out at the Pettises, who have selected eight-year-old Jacob. Missie offers to take Belinda in. A passing horseman, Sheriff Zach Tyler, has also noticed her.
