Plot summary
In present-day New York City, Edge, a young criminal, breaks into the apartment of Angela, an ailing old woman, who confronts him at gunpoint. While he waits for a chance to leave, she tells him about Luke and Elijah, outlaw brothers who travel at the turn of the twentieth century to Ottoman-controlled Macedonia. Ill will sits between the two men, and a woman named Lilith divides them. Elijah, the religious brother, takes the side of the Ottoman sultan; Luke, a gunslinger, joins the Teacher, a Macedonian rebel. Edge, meanwhile, searches for Angela's gold, hoping to settle a debt, and the two of them draw closer.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Dust (2001)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- When Dust premiered as the opening film of the 2001 Venice Film Festival, critics accused director Milcho Manchevski of pushing a political agenda, and Evening Standard critic Alexander Walker called it racist for its portrayal of the Turkish army. Others said it took sides in Macedonia's armed conflict, even though filming predated the hostilities.
- Manchevski answered the Venice accusations later, saying his film was even-handed and spared no brutal killers, but the damage was done: reviews only softened once Dust left Venice for regular theaters, and it never achieved the wide distribution expected of the follow-up to his hit Before the Rain.
