Plot summary
Marty Claridge, nineteen, leaves for the western plains with her husband Aaron, hoping to build a new life by covered wagon. Aaron dies in a riding accident soon after they arrive, leaving Marty pregnant and with nowhere to go before winter. Settlers Ben and Sarah Graham befriend her and urge her to consider an offer from Clark Davis, a widower raising his nine-year-old daughter Missie. Clark proposes a marriage in name only: Marty will have a home until the spring thaw, when the wagon train returns east, and in return she will teach and care for Missie, who is still mourning her mother. Marty accepts, and the three settle into an arrangement that suits none of them well at first.
