Plot summary
In 2020, a Terminator known as the Rev-9 travels back through time to Mexico City, ordered to kill Dani Ramos, a young woman who works at an automobile assembly plant. A cybernetically enhanced soldier named Grace comes back from 2042 to guard her, and when the Rev-9 attacks the plant, Grace gets Dani away. Sarah Connor, who has spent years hunting Terminators, arrives and helps them escape. Grace needs medicine and rest for her augmented body to keep going, and she tells them the intelligence behind the Rev-9 is called Legion. Dani matters to a war that has not happened yet, so the three set out for the border while the machine follows.

James Cameron chose to kill off John Connor, the franchise's longtime central hero, within the film's first minutes specifically to shock longtime fans and erase their assumptions about where the story would go.- In the film, Arnold Schwarzenegger's character Carl runs a drapery van bearing the number "888-512-1984", a working phone line that plays a recording of Schwarzenegger and references May 12, 1984, the exact date Kyle Reese time-travels to in the original Terminator.
- Special effects supervisor Neil Corbould built the film's largest set piece in Budapest, an 85-ton rotating gimbal representing a C-5 plane fuselage, powered by more than a mile and a half of hydraulic hoses.
- Linda Hamilton spent more than a year working with a fitness trainer to get into shape, saying she put ten times more effort into her physique than she had for Terminator 2; the regimen included supplements, bioidentical hormones and training with Green Berets.
