Plot summary
A colossal alien ship circles Earth, and the attack that follows comes in waves. An electromagnetic pulse kills the power and communications, earthquakes and tsunamis drown the coasts, and a modified bird flu leaves few survivors. Sixteen-year-old Cassie Sullivan and her younger brother Sam escape the flooding in Ohio by climbing a tree; their mother, Lisa, dies in the plague. With their father, Oliver, they reach a summer camp that shelters about three hundred survivors. A US Army unit arrives in vehicles that still run, led by Colonel Alexander Vosch, who warns of a fifth wave still to come. He says the children will be taken to Wright-Patterson AFB for safety, and the buses will come back for the adults. Cassie and Sam are separated, and she sets off toward the base.
