Elizabeth Berkley
Biography
Elizabeth Berkley is an American actress who came to prominence as Jessie Spano on Saved by the Bell. She took the lead as Nomi Malone in Showgirls (1995), a part she pursued personally. The movie's harsh reception led to two Razzie Awards, for worst actress and worst new star, yet she went on to supporting roles in The First Wives Club (1996), Any Given Sunday (1999), The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001) and Roger Dodger (2002), along with The Real Blonde (1997), S. Darko (2009), Lucky Christmas (2011) and Shell (2025). Her stage work includes a West End staging of Lenny, the Broadway comedy Sly Fox and an Off-Broadway run of Hurlyburly. In 2020 she played Jessie Spano again in Peacock's Saved by the Bell revival and served as a producer. She drew four Young Artist Award nominations for the show, and the cast of The First Wives Club won a National Board of Review ensemble honor.

Big break
Berkley personally called Showgirls producer Charles Evans, introduced herself as Nomi, and told director Paul Verhoeven at her first audition that he could stop looking for other actresses.
A role that slipped away
Berkley was cast as Roxie Hart in the Broadway musical Chicago in 2001, but the role ultimately did not happen for undisclosed reasons.
Early training
Berkley trained with acting coach Roy London soon after finishing at Calabasas High School. She and co-star Tiffani Amber Thiessen exited Saved by the Bell ahead of time in its fourth and final season, mainly to focus on feature films.
Getting ready for a role
For Taxman, Avi Nesher's independent drama, Berkley prepared to play a Russian girl living in Brighton Beach by spending two months with a dialogue coach at Berlitz.
