Plot summary

Calvin Weir-Fields published a celebrated first novel at nineteen and has not finished another since. His therapist, Dr. Rosenthal, suggests he write one page about anything, and a dream gives Calvin a woman named Ruby Sparks, a character he confesses he has fallen for. Harry, his brother, finds the writing overly idealized and unrealistic, and a woman's belongings begin turning up around Calvin's house. Calvin writes a passage in which Ruby loves him and falls asleep at his typewriter. The next morning Ruby is in his kitchen, alive, and believes the two of them are together. Harry does not believe the story and tells Calvin to find someone who can confirm she is not real.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Ruby Sparks (2012)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Zoe Kazan, who plays the eponymous character, also wrote the film: she was initially inspired by a discarded mannequin and the myth of Pygmalion, quickly writing twenty pages before putting the script aside for six months.
  • While writing, Kazan thought of Woody Allen's The Purple Rose of Cairo and Groundhog Day, wanting to present a slanted version of our own reality, and from early in the development she wrote the lead character Calvin with her boyfriend Paul Dano in mind.
  • The party hosted by Langdon Tharp was shot in the John Sowden House in Los Feliz, a home designed by Lloyd Wright, son of Frank Lloyd Wright.
  • Antonio Banderas plays Mort, the carefree boyfriend of Calvin's mother, and took on the role for the opportunity to work with Bening.
  • Kazan rejects the description of Ruby Sparks as a Manic Pixie Dream Girl, calling it reductive and diminutive, and says the film is instead about the danger of idealizing a person, of reducing a person down to an idea of a person.
