Plot summary
At seven, Darby Harper was caught in a wave that drowned her and her mother. Darby was brought back, and since then she sees and communicates with ghosts, running a side business that helps Deados finish what they could not do while alive so they can move on. The work keeps her apart from her classmates, among them Capricorn Donahue, called Capri, the popular cheerleader. Gary, once the school's janitor, is the only friend she has; he is a Stayer, waiting for his wife Linda so he can move on too. A new student, Alex, the school's mascot, is drawn to her despite her efforts to put him off. She also clashes with Capri over James, Capri's boyfriend, who is considerate and kind.
