Plot summary
Bertram Pincus runs a dental practice in Manhattan and keeps his distance from everyone around him. During a colonoscopy under general anesthesia he is dead for seven minutes, and when he comes to he can see and hear the dead. The ghosts of the city crowd him with requests, wanting him to finish business they left behind. Frank Herlihy hangs around him too, offering to keep the other spirits away if Bertram will break up the engagement of his widow Gwen, an Egyptologist, to Richard, a lawyer Frank says is dishonest. Bertram, who has never been warm to Gwen, agrees to try.

- Ricky Gervais, the film's lead actor, was blunt about his own casting, saying of the character: “Just what America wants: a fat, British, middle-aged comedian trying to be a semi-romantic lead.”
- Rotten Tomatoes singled the film out with a special award, giving it a Golden Tomato for the best-reviewed romance film of 2008.
- On the film's 2009 UK DVD release, Mark Kermode said comparing Ghost Town with Woody Allen's “early funny ones” may seem brash, but that its blend of absurdist fantasy, bittersweet romcom and deadpan physical humor evokes Allen escapades from Sleeper to Alice.
