Plot summary
Kenneth Magee is a writer who makes a bet with his publisher: he will deliver a novel matching the quality of Wuthering Heights in a single day, and the stake is $20,000. He chooses a remote Welsh estate, Bllyddpaetwr Manor, thinking he will have it to himself. When he gets there, Lord Elijah Grisbane and his daughter Victoria are already in residence. On a stormy night, others reach the house: Lord Grisbane's sons Lionel and Sebastian, Mary Norton, who works as the publisher's secretary, and Corrigan, a man considering buying the property. The Grisbanes have kept the mansion going by themselves.
