Plot summary
Foster Twelvetrees is a struggling actor in 1907. Stewart Henderson invites him to a large country house to perform a dramatic reading for the Henderson family. Stewart seems friendly, though earlier he had secretly cut a poster of Twelvetrees. While the two men talk, Stewart's sister Jessica and Patel, the Indian servant, search the visitor's luggage. Afterward Stewart and Jessica talk in riddles about something they could not find there.
