Plot summary
Cheryl Stratton argues with her roommate Judy, decides to move out and steals Judy's wallet, and instead of returning to Ohio she goes to the King Edward Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The hotel is run by her maternal Aunt Martha, a brusque, conservative woman Cheryl has never met, who lets her stay for a while and considers the King Edward a respectable hotel. Martha's one provision is that Cheryl stay off the halls at night. The guests and long-term residents she meets there are unusual, and not long after she moves in, Cheryl becomes aware that someone is watching her. Judy's boyfriend Mike comes to the hotel asking after Cheryl and runs into the Reverend Moon, a guest who dresses as a priest.

- MGM studio head James Aubrey ordered the title changed from the working title Blood Relations to Private Parts, but some newspapers would not print that title, so in Chicago the film was advertised as Private Arts.
- Paul Bartel shot Private Parts as a horror film, then cut away ten minutes before the climax and turned it into a pure comedy, describing it as a horror film touched with comedy.
