Trailer

Plot summary

In 1959, partygoers at the Grand Island Hotel welcome the New Year and then disappear. Decades on, Lesley and Tom, Janet and Rick, and their friend Spud are at a funfair by the sea when they spot Dad, Ace and The Bear terrorizing an American tourist, Carol. The friends pull her away and escape by boat, which runs aground on Grand Island. The hotel they find appears empty, yet its lobby is hung with Christmas trimmings in the middle of summer. Spud goes to fetch a dry towel for Carol, while in a guestroom Janet and Rick put on 1950s clothes. Music draws Spud to the ballroom, where a duo performs and then vanishes.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • According to director Norman J. Warren, the premise of Bloody New Year was inspired by the real-life contamination of a Scottish island caused by a failed disease-control experiment.
  • SPOILERWarren planned a climax in which the zombified Dad, played by Steve Emerson, kills Rick by slicing his head with an outboard motor propeller, but the violence was toned down so the British Board of Film Classification would give the film a 15 certificate rather than an 18.
  • Actor Mark Powley performed a stunt in which his character Rick opens a cottage's back door and ends up dangling over a cliff edge, and he did it without safety equipment.
  • The fairground scenes were shot at Barry Island's funfair, whose owners gave the crew full use of the site and its attractions for £300 for a week's shooting; to recruit extras, the crew offered free rides to the public.
  • Director Norman J. Warren said that his experiences on Bloody New Year, the 1987 British horror film he directed, put him off making any more films.
