Plot summary
Lenora Locke travels from Boston to the mansion of her estranged father, Locke, who is drunk and grieving for her mother, Morella, and blames Lenora for the death, which came in childbirth. In the second tale, Montresor Herringbone, a drunkard who lives off the wages his wife Annabel earns in a tavern, challenges the wine taster Fortunato Luchresi to a contest, and Luchresi walks him home and meets Annabel. In the third, Ernest Valdemar, wealthy and dying in great pain, employs the hypnotist Carmichael to ease his suffering with trances, and asks his wife, Helene, and Dr. Elliot James to marry after his death.

- To make Vincent Price's face seem to melt in "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar", the crew heated a mixture of glue, glycerin, corn starch and make-up paint and poured it over his head; it was so hot he could stand it only a few seconds. The slow decomposition was done with an old-fashioned mud pack that dries and cracks the skin.
- For the burning finish of the "Morella" segment, director Roger Corman reused sets and event footage from the fiery climax of his earlier Poe film House of Usher.
