Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Believers (1987)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The Believers was cited as an influence on the cult led by Adolfo Constanzo and supported by Sara Aldrete in Matamoros, Mexico, a group based on Palo Mayombe, an Afro-Cuban religion similar to Santería.
- Because Santería was closely guarded, director John Schlesinger and writer Mark Frost hired actress Carla Pinza, who plays Carmen Ruiz in the film, as a technical advisor, she was an initiate priestess of the religion. Schlesinger wanted to avoid misrepresenting Santería, so he showed it as a force for good and Brujería, black magic, as the villain.
