Plot summary
On the Galveston boardwalk, a woman named Loretta Akers is found with her throat cut, the latest in a run of killings. Detective Mike Seaver, once a minor league ballplayer, takes the scene, where a scrap of paper in her garter belt reads "best of luck". He argues with county officer Kyle Broussard, who guards the case closely. With detective Oscar Mendoza, Mike matches each murder to a win by Houston Astros pitcher Sil Baretto. Two more women are found in a carnival funhouse where Roxy, Mike's fiancee, works, and the same words are written in blood on a mirror. The autopsies point to a left-handed killer, while the notes read as the work of a right hand.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Night Game (1989)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The production was interrupted when Hurricane Gilbert arrived, forcing the cast and crew to evacuate Galveston, where the film had been shooting on location.
- Director Peter Masterson needed a real Astro to hit a home run for a tricky plot twist in the film, and Glenn Davis hit it, so he got into the movie.
- Night Game was the first movie in years to be filmed in the Houston Astrodome; earlier films shot there included Robert Altman's 1971 Brewster McCloud, The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training and the TV movie Murder at the World Series.
- Former Astro Norm Miller, then a team executive, arranged for squads of amateur players to imitate the pros; the crew got the field after games ended and worked until dawn every night, quitting when it got too light.
- Dodgers outfielder Mike Marshall was expected to hit a home run for the film but didn't, so Masterson used footage of a Marshall single and cut quickly from the crack of the bat to crowd shots.
- Night Game was originally scripted to be set in San Francisco, but director Peter Masterson, a Houston native, moved it to Texas, saying a lot of movies are made in San Francisco and not as many in Houston or Galveston.
