Trailer

Plot summary

A drop of sunlight grows a magic flower with healing power, and Gothel uses it to stay young. When soldiers take the flower to cure the kingdom's sick queen, she recovers and gives birth to Rapunzel, whose golden hair carries the flower's magic. Gothel abducts the baby and raises her in a hidden tower, using her hair to climb up and keeping her away from the world. Rapunzel, now nearly eighteen, watches lanterns rise over the kingdom every year on her birthday and asks to see them for herself; Gothel refuses. When the thief Flynn Rider takes refuge in the tower, Rapunzel captures him and offers to return the tiara she has hidden if he guides her to the lanterns.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Tangled (2010)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Conceived and proposed by Disney animator Glen Keane in 2001, Tangled spent six years in production at a cost estimated at $260 million, making it the most expensive animated feature film ever made and one of the most expensive films of all time.
  • In October 2008 it was reported that Keane and Wellins had stepped down as directors due to other commitments and were replaced by Byron Howard and Nathan Greno. After the film's release, Keane revealed that he had stepped back from the role because of a heart attack in 2008.
  • Animating hair turned out to be the hardest technical problem: a senior software engineer spent six years writing programs to make it move the way they wanted, and as late as January 2010 the directors were still not sure the length of Rapunzel's hair would work. An improved hair simulation program originally developed for Bolt finally solved it in March.
  • The directors auditioned hundreds of young actresses to find Rapunzel's voice, among them Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell, and rejected both of them for not sounding right.
  • Because Flynn Rider was intended to be British, the studio mandated that only UK actors audition for the part. Zachary Levi, an American, auditioned impersonating a British Received Pronunciation accent, and the producers then opted for him to use his natural American accent.
  • The film used a new technique called multi-rigging, made up of multiple pairs of virtual cameras, each pair used individually on a separate element that adds depth to a scene, such as background, foreground and characters. Sandwiched together later in production, the result was something visually impossible in the real world.
