Nathan Greno
Biography
Nathan Greno is an American director, story artist, and writer whose animation career began when Walt Disney Feature Animation hired him in 1996 while he was still a junior at Columbus College of Art and Design. Born in Kenosha, he had loved Disney movies since first grade and spent his boyhood drawing comics and strips. He first cleaned up animation on Mulan (1998), then moved into story work, contributing to Brother Bear (2003), writing a screenplay and story work on Meet the Robinsons (2007), and supervising story on Bolt (2008). His directing debut came with the short Super Rhino (2009). Greno took over the long-gestating Rapunzel project in 2006 and chose Byron Howard as co-director; Tangled (2010) earned strong reviews and box office, and the two later made Tangled Ever After (2012). After the shelving of Gigantic, he joined Skydance Animation in 2018 and wrote and directed Swapped (2026).

First role
In 1996, while he was a junior at Columbus College of Art and Design, Walt Disney Feature Animation hired Greno. His first job there was animation clean-up work on Mulan.
Big break
Greno took over the long-in-development project Tangled in 2006 and chose Byron Howard, a collaborator on Bolt and Super Rhino, as his directing partner.
A role that slipped away
Greno was set to direct an animated film called Gigantic, loosely based on Jack and the Beanstalk and scheduled for 2020, but it was shelved in October 2017.
Behind the camera
In February 2018, Greno agreed to a multi-year deal with Skydance Animation to write and direct Powerless, an animated film, and to consult on projects in development. After its "teenage superhero story" premise was retooled, the film became Pookoo and then Swapped, released in May 2026.
