Biography

Byron Howard is an American animator, character designer and director who got his start at Disney as a tour guide at the Disney MGM Studios before being hired there in 1994. Born in Misawa, Japan, he was raised near Philadelphia and in Issaquah, Washington, and studied at Evergreen State College. He animated on Pocahontas and Mulan, and later on Lilo & Stitch and Brother Bear, while his work on Brother Bear brought a 2003 Annie Award nomination for character animation. Bolt (2008), his first directing job, earned a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards. He went on to co-direct Tangled (2010) with Nathan Greno and Zootopia (2016) with Rich Moore, and worked again with Greno on the short Tangled Ever After (2012), which the pair wrote and directed around supporting characters from Tangled. Encanto (2021) followed, and he has four Academy Award nominations, winning for Zootopia and Encanto.
