Plot summary
Franklin Storm runs the Baxter Foundation, a government-funded institute for gifted young people. He recruits Reed Richards, whose teleporter, built with his friend Ben Grimm, promises a way into another dimension. At the institute Reed joins Storm's daughter Sue, a scientist, and her brother Johnny, an engineer. Victor Von Doom, Storm's protégé and the creator of the Quantum Gate, works with them, though the board doubts him. When the machine works, the government plans to send its own team through the gate to a parallel dimension. Passed over for that trip, Reed, Johnny, Victor and Ben use the gate themselves, and the world beyond changes them.

- Director Josh Trank said casting Jordan as Johnny Storm brought the iconic comic book team in line with real-world demographics; he then received numerous death threats through IMDb message boards and slept with a .38 Special on his nightstand, returning the gun after production had wrapped.
- The day before the film's release, Trank posted a message on Twitter criticizing the finished film: "A year ago I had a fantastic version of this. And it would've received great reviews. You'll probably never see it. That's reality though."
- Trank said he wanted a Black Susan Storm, a Black Johnny Storm and a Black Franklin Storm, but found a lot of pretty heavy push back on casting a Black woman in that role, and later said being denied a Black Susan Storm should have convinced him to step away from the project.
- The studio was caught off-guard by the first cut of the film for having a "morose tone", and hastily cobbled together a new ending written from pieces of the original draft plus new material produced on the day of reshoots; Stephen E. Rivkin was hired to edit alongside Trank and was called the de facto director of the new cut.
- Actress Kate Mara later described her experience making the film as "horrible," saying much of her discomfort came from questionable direction and that she regretted not standing up for herself at the time.
- Actor Mads Mikkelsen auditioned for the role of Doctor Doom, and later said the only thing he was asked to do at the audition was stretch his arms out as far as he could make them.
- Dr. Doom's full name in the film was originally going to be changed to "Victor Domashev," but after backlash from fans it was switched back to "Victor Von Doom" during reshoots to match the character's name in the Marvel Comics.
