Plot summary

In 1945, Steve Rogers, known as Captain America, leads a mission to an island near Norway to stop a Nazi superweapon aimed at the United States. He destroys the missile but falls into the North Atlantic and is believed dead. Decades later, S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury recovers his body and revives him. The world faces an alien threat: invaders destroy a S.H.I.E.L.D. satellite, and Fury starts Project: Avenger. Bruce Banner works on a super soldier serum while taking medication to hold back the Hulk. Fury and Rogers approach Thor, who refuses. The recruits include Iron Man, Giant-Man, Wasp, Natalia Romanoff and Betty Ross. Fury briefs them on the aliens, called the Chitauri, and on the metal vibranium, while Rogers is unsure about leading the team.
