Plot summary
In Lombardy under the reign of Frederick Barbarossa, the archer Dardo Bartoli takes his son Rudi into town, where Count Ulrich, called the Hawk, appears with his niece, Lady Anne, and his mistress Francesca. Dardo puts his bow to work and drops the nobleman's treasured hawk. The count retaliates by ordering that Rudi be brought to his castle. Wounded by an arrow as he runs, Dardo loses the boy, who lets himself be taken so the soldiers will follow him. At the palace, the young Marchese Alessandro de Granazia declines to pay Ulrich's taxes and is arrested and stripped of his land. Dardo frees him, and the marchese joins the outlaw band that shelters in a Roman ruin.

- Warner Bros. offered $1 million to anyone who could prove Burt Lancaster did not perform all his stunts in The Flame and the Arrow. After Don Turner claimed he had performed some stunts, the studio refused to pay and an appeals-court judge ruled against the breach-of-contract claim.
- Burt Lancaster trained for three months before playing Dardo Bartoli, running three miles a day and working on the bars and rings, handball and swimming.
