Plot summary
At the Totten Foundation of Music, seven scholars have been working for nine years on a music encyclopedia. Their sponsor, Miss Totten, arrives with her lawyer and warns that the growing cost may end the financing; the older scholars persuade her to continue it. Two window washers come in for help with a radio quiz show and introduce the group to boogie woogie, swing, jive and blues. Hobart Frisbee, the folk music expert, realizes his own section of the encyclopedia is outdated. He goes to nightclubs and asks jazz musicians to come to the foundation for a discussion the next morning. One of them is Honey Swanson, a nightclub singer; her boyfriend, the gangster Tony Crow, is wanted by the police. She turns down his invitation, then hides at the foundation to escape a subpoena to testify against Tony.

- Danny Kaye's wife and personal songwriter, Sylvia Fine, refused to work on any more of his films after he left her for actress Eve Arden, so because Kaye wanted no one else writing his songs, he sang nothing at all in A Song Is Born.
- Howard Hawks had little interest in remaking his own earlier film and only took on A Song Is Born, its musical remake, for the $250,000 paycheck.
