Plot summary
In 1859 a letter from a mysterious stranger brings Mary Stevens from New Zealand to North Yorkshire. She is a young Māori woman and an orphan, and she is also called Mārama. The stranger claims to know about her parents, and Mary travels to England to learn about her whakapapa. At Hawkser Manor, Nathaniel Cole meets her. He offers her work as governess to his granddaughter, and the house does not feel right to her.
