Plot summary
Britain's Ministry of Defence, fearing war with China over Taiwan, wants soldiers who can speak Chinese and kill without hesitation. At an underground base, scientists fit brain-damaged troops with cybernetic implants that restore lost functions. Vincent McCarthy, the AI researcher there, tests soldier Paul Dawson, who cannot recall his past and shows no empathy, and keeps refusing Dawson's requests to see his mother. McCarthy's work then produces steadier cyborgs that lose speech but share a private means of communication. Ava, a researcher demonstrating artificial intelligence of her own, is recruited to supply the programming for a self-aware android, with the promise of unlimited funding. McCarthy intends that technology to help his daughter Mary, who has Rett syndrome.
