Biography

Stuart Margolin was an American actor, director, and screenwriter. Born in Davenport, Iowa, in 1940 and raised partly in Dallas, he was best known as Evelyn Martin, nicknamed Angel, the scheming former jailmate of Jim Rockford on The Rockford Files. That part brought him two Emmy Awards as a drama series supporting actor, first in 1979 and again in 1980, and he had earlier appeared opposite James Garner in the Western series Nichols. He wrote and co-produced the 1969 television movie The Ballad of Andy Crocker, an early story about Vietnam veterans returning home. His film credits included Kelly's Heroes (1970), Death Wish (1974), and Futureworld (1976), as well as The Big Bus (1976) and S.O.B. (1981). He also directed episodes of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Magnum, P.I., Quantum Leap, and Northern Exposure, and he won a Directors Guild of America Award in 1996 for Salt Water Moose. He died in 2022.
