Plot summary
In 1958, two sailors on leave race through Clarksberg, a town known for speed traps, trying to reach their base on time. Sheriff Roy Childress runs their Ford off a sharp mountain curve, killing both. Michael McCord, brother of one of the dead men, arrives soon after in a black 1934 Ford coupe he calls The California Kid. Childress stops him for speeding, and McCord says the car can go from zero to 75 miles per hour in ten seconds, then pleads guilty before Judge J.A. Hooker and pays the fine. At the diner he leaves a clipped newspaper article about the crash on the counter for Childress and Maggie to see.

- According to producer Howie Horwitz, two shots required stunt drivers to remain in cars as they drove off roads and downslope. Cinematographer Terry Meade said one was planned with a cameramen below the road, but he swapped him out for a remotely controlled camera which the stunt car destroyed.
