Plot summary
In 1950s Hollywood, David Merrill directs films and spends long stretches on location abroad, leaving his wife Ruth and son Paulie for months at a time. He comes home to find the House Committee on Un-American Activities and the FBI pressing people across the industry to name anyone tied to the Communist Party. Felix Graff, a legal consultant for the studios, tells David he can work again if he cites four names, among them the screenwriter Bunny Baxter. David refuses, and the studios shut him out, including producers who would never have hired him before. He cannot cover what Ruth and Paulie need.
