Joe Santos
Biography
Joe Santos was an American actor born in Brooklyn in 1931 who died in 2016. His career stretched from small early film parts to long-running television work. After years of manual jobs, he landed a role in The Panic in Needle Park (1971). Further early credits included The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight (1971), The Don Is Dead (1973), Shaft's Big Score! (1972), Blade (1973), Shamus (1973), and The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973). His breakthrough came on The Rockford Files, where he played LAPD Sergeant Dennis Becker, later a lieutenant, from 1974 to 1980, earning a 1979 Emmy nomination in the outstanding supporting actor in a drama series category. He returned to that part in eight Rockford Files television movies from 1994 to 1999. Later roles included Lt. Frank Harper on Hardcastle and McCormick from 1985 to 1986, Angelo Garepe in seven 2004 episodes of The Sopranos, and a part in The Postman (1997).

While trying to make it in show business, Santos took blue-collar jobs. His friend Al Pacino then helped him land a part in the 1971 movie The Panic in Needle Park.
