Vic Tayback

Biography

Vic Tayback, born in Brooklyn, New York, was an American actor best known for playing Mel Sharples, a diner owner, in the film Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974) and in the television comedy Alice from 1976 to 1985. He began acting at age 25 after serving in the United States Navy and remained a member of the Actors Studio throughout his life. During the 1960s and 1970s he guest starred on shows such as Star Trek, Gunsmoke, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, All in the Family and The Love Boat. His movie credits included The Gambler (1974), Bullitt (1968), Papillon (1973), The Cheap Detective (1978) and All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989). Tayback also performed in over 25 stage productions, among them Twelve Angry Men, Death of a Salesman and Brighton Beach Memoirs, and helped found the theater company Company of Angels. He received Golden Globe Awards for Alice in 1980 and 1981 and a Primetime Emmy nomination.
