Stuart Holmes
Biography
Stuart Holmes, born Joseph Liebchen in 1884, was a silent screen leading man whose career began in 1909. He starred in Life's Shop Window (1914), the first feature made by Fox, shot on Staten Island for $4,500. With a cold gaze and a mustache, Holmes had a menacing air and found his niche as dastardly villains of French, Italian or Russian origin. For The Prisoner of Zenda (1922), critics praised his Grand Duke Michael, and for Tess of the D'Urbervilles (1924), his Alexander. His characters seldom survived to the end of a picture. He moved from Fox to Metro for similar work, then took character parts once sound arrived. In the mid-1930s he joined Warner Brothers as an extra, performing uncredited and cameo bits until he retired in 1964. By then he had appeared in around 530 films. He died in 1971.
