Renie Riano
Biography
Renie Riano was a character actress whose career began in vaudeville, where she performed as Baby Irene in an act alongside her mother, the British stage actress Irene Riano. She sang, made audiences laugh, and went on to appear in Broadway musicals before entering films in 1937. On screen she was typed as shrill, sharp-tongued wives and domestics, and she used her rubbery, sharp features to comic effect, though many of her parts were unbilled and she was largely confined to B pictures. During her career she appeared in two movie series: she was Effie, a cynical maid, in the Nancy Drew movies, and she played Maggie, the domineering wife, in the Bringing Up Father films opposite Joe Yule Sr. as Jiggs, a series that ended when Yule died. Later she acted on television, mostly in 1950s and 1960s situation comedies, again as haranguing types but in smaller parts. She died in 1971.
