Sam De Grasse
Biography
Sam De Grasse was a Canadian actor who trained as a dentist before he traveled to New York City and made his first motion picture in 1912. Born in Bathurst, New Brunswick, he started with secondary parts, including Dr. Robert Armstrong in Blind Husbands (1919). When Mary Pickford established a studio of her own with Douglas Fairbanks, he joined them and portrayed the villainous Prince John in Fairbanks's Robin Hood (1922). From then on he specialized in crafty or villainous roles. In The Birth of a Nation (1915) he was Senator Charles Summer, in Intolerance (1916) the mill owner Arthur Jenkins, in The Courtship of Miles Standish (1923) John Carver, in The Eagle of the Sea (1926) Colonel Lestron, in The Black Pirate (1926) a pirate lieutenant, in The King of Kings (1927) a Pharisee, and in The Man Who Laughs (1928) King James. Mary Pickford named him one of her favorite stars.
