Plot summary
In 1858, Emperor Louis Napoleon sends Major Nicolet, Minister La Roche and Captain Renault of the Royal Dragoons to Normandy to seek out a rebel group. Lady Christianne, whose uncle is the Marquis de Montableau, comes to a secret meeting of Normandy's underground leaders as the Masked Cavalier and declares that the treasure of Monte Cristo, which she says was willed to her, will pay for the cause. The sword of Monte Cristo carries symbols that her uncle alone can read. They are the key to the treasure, and he scorns her defiance of the Emperor. La Roche seizes the sword and has the Marquis thrown into a dungeon.
