Paul Winchell
Biography
Paul Winchell was an American ventriloquist, comedian, and actor who also worked as an inventor and flourished in the 1950s and 1960s. Born in New York City in 1922, he began performing with his dummies Jerry Mahoney and Knucklehead Smiff and hosted The Paul Winchell Show from 1950 to 1954 and Winchell-Mahoney Time from 1965 to 1968. He later became a voice actor, originating the roles of Tigger, Dick Dastardly, and Gargamel. For Disney he voiced Tigger in the Winnie the Pooh featurettes and played Shun Gon in The AristoCats (1970) and Boomer in The Fox and the Hound (1981). He won a Grammy for his work in Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too. He also appeared in Which Way to the Front? (1970) and voiced the Dread Baron in Yogi Bear and the Magical Flight of the Spruce Goose (1987). He died in 2005.

Winchell held an early US patent for an artificial heart, developed with Henry Heimlich, and the University of Utah School of Medicine cited his patents as prior art when it tried to patent a similar device.
