Plot summary
Danny Kean has run a gang, and when he leaves prison he gives it up, handing control to Jerry the Mug. He has always wanted to work as a news reporter, so he calls on Al McLean, city editor of the Graphic News, who once offered him a job while he was locked up. McLean is not eager to hire a convict. The biggest story in town is the death of a fireman's wife and her lover in a blaze.

- While making Picture Snatcher, Alice White was knocked unconscious and nearly lost her teeth when a punch from James Cagney missed its mark and struck her in the head.
- Patricia Ellis, who played Cagney's love interest Pat Nolan, was only 14 when Picture Snatcher was released; she had lied about her age when she signed her Warner Bros. contract in 1932, so the studio believed she was two years older.
- Picture Snatcher was based on a semiautobiographical story by Daniel Ahern, a former underworld figure who had also worked as a tabloid photographer; the same story was the basis of the 1942 film Escape from Crime.
