Plot summary
Ethan Wilkins is a poor preacher with a stern hand and a loving one, and his son Jason grows up bright, outgoing and stubborn. The boy's pride and rudeness earn him beatings with a leather strap, and he chafes against his father's discipline while his mother Mary indulges him. As a young man Jason courts Annie Hawks, and Ethan takes him along on circuit riding, where the coarse food and hard conditions turn the trip into a quarrel and a fistfight. Jason leaves for medical school and becomes a doctor, a path that carries him away from the ministry his father serves.
