Ralph Wright
Biography
Ralph Wright was a Disney animator, story writer and voice actor. Born in Grants Pass, he joined the studio in the 1940s and became known for his gloomy, sullen manner and his bass voice. He was a pioneer in using gags in cartoons and, with Goofy's Glider and the How To shorts, in building stories around a hero's failed attempt at his goal, a device Frank Tashlin credited to him. After World War II he served as an animation supervisor for David Hand's Gaumont-British Animation studio in Cookham, returning to the United States when it closed in 1950. His story credits included Bambi (1942), Peter Pan (1953), Lady and the Tramp (1955), Sleeping Beauty (1959), The Jungle Book (1967) and The Aristocats (1970). He voiced Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree (1966), Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day (1968) and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977). He died in 1983.

Getting ready for a role
In his later years, Wright proved a natural model for Eeyore once the studio started developing Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree. He also helped pioneer the use of gags in cartoons, acting them out before the story board.
Behind the camera
With Goofy's Glider and other "How To" cartoons, Wright pioneered a story concept in which a hero fails to reach his goals. That technique is still used in most major animation studios.
