Plot summary
Ella Bishop, a teacher near the end of her career, looks back over the years that brought her to the classroom. In the 1880s she is a student at Midwestern University, an inhibited young woman who lives with her mother and her cousin Amy and dreams of teaching. On graduation Professor Corcoran, the school's president, offers her a place on the faculty, and she accepts it as a stage of a life she expects to include marriage and children. She becomes engaged to the lawyer Delbert Thompson, though her cousin Amy wants only romance. The grocer Sam Peters loves her and stays a steady friend, and Corcoran urges her to remain at the university when she thinks of leaving.
