Plot summary
In 1885 Count Danilo is captain of the royal guard in the kingdom of Marshovia. He sees the widowed Madame Sonia at a military parade and one night hands her a letter he has written declaring his love. She declines. Sonia wears a face veil as Marshovian tradition dictates, and a year later she resolves to leave the kingdom for Paris. King Achmed is alarmed because her wealth controls the kingdom's economy, and he wants a suitor to bring her back.
